Purchase of The Independent


March 30, 2010

Following the purchase of the London Evening Standard for £1 last year, Russian billionaire Alexander Lebedev has now acquired The Independent and The Independent on Sunday for the same price. He purchased the papers from Independent News & Media and the deal is expected to be completed in May, pending approval from the Irish Competition Authority.

New websites for The Times and The Sunday Times

The Times and The Sunday Times have announced their new websites will launch in May. There will be two new sites containing each publication’s individual content, www.thetimes.co.uk and www.thesundaytimes.co.uk. From June the cost of accessing both sites will be £1 per day or £2 per week.

John Authers, currently investment editor and principle commentator on markets and investments, has been appointed the FT’s global editor of Lex. John will continue to write the ‘Long View’ column, which appears every Saturday, as well as numerous columns for the FT’s special supplements. He takes up his new role on 1 April 2010 . (more…)

There are early signs that Twitter has reached its peak, with user growth slowing significantly. Meanwhile, Gartner says that email is also on the wane, projecting that by 2014 20% of business users will rely more on social media for their interpersonal communications. (more…)
